I am excited to showcase this property from Cobham Chewton Rose. Cobham Chewton Rose are new to Trying to Balance the Madness but from old origins as it turns out one of the partners and I used to be in secondary school together. So thank you Cobham Chewton Rose for allowing to showcase such a special property.
A 16th century cottage once owned by Lord Lovelace and his wife Ada, who was the daughter of poet Lord Byron, has come on to the market with premium estate agent Chewton Rose.
Old Greendene Cottage, which has a guide price of £2,150,000, is set in about two acres of mature gardens and woodland, and features a swimming pool and tennis court. The current owners explained they were drawn to the property, which is close to East Horsley, by the sense of history it offered, as well as the seclusion.
“This is a beautiful house, with so much character. When we renovated it, we were determined to retain that period feel. Everything we did was carried out carefully and enhanced the property. We had the indoor swimming pool, which has a retractable roof, put in and we also added the tennis court. We also created an office above the garage. This could be an annexe if that suited the needs of new owners. It has a bathroom and offers very flexible accommodation.”
Old Greendene Cottage was once part of the Lovelace Estate. Even further back, with records dating back to 1533, it was believed to have been an independent farm, belonging to wealthy families who were involved in the wool trade. The left hand wing of the property is a medieval hall house while the right, built out to a right angle, dates from the 17th century and has a “smoke bay.”
The house was later bought by William King, Lord Lovelace, who renovated it in 1874. At that point, it was encased in brick and flint and “Lovelace” windows, to tie in with those elsewhere on the estate, were installed. This house is Grade II Listed and still retains many of its features, including the windows and inglenook fireplace. There are so many attractive elements to Old Greendene Cottage, from the fabulous cellar to the ground floor bedroom, which has its own en suite bathroom, making it perfect for guests.
“We have had some superb parties here, particularly in the summer. We can have the retractable roof pulled right back on the swimming pool, and barbecues out in the courtyard. We also love playing tennis, the grounds here are just beautiful. We have extended the garden quite a bit but have kept the area of woodland quite natural. We like the village life here and find it easy to travel to East Horsley and to the train station at Effingham. From there we can travel into London. At the same time, it is very secluded here. I know we will miss the peace and quiet when we leave.” enthuses the owner.
Inside the house, favourite spaces include the drawing room. This is an inviting room all year round, said the owners.
“This room looks out on to the garden. There are terrace doors that open on to the courtyard. There is a large television in there so it is nice to spend time in there in the evening and it is lovely in the winter months, when the wood-burner is lit in the inglenook fireplace. At Christmas, the dining room really comes into its own. There are original floorboards in here that we have had French polished, and it is the perfect place to sit down to Christmas dinner.”
This stunning cottage can be found sitting at the end of a gated shingle driveway bordered on both sides by colorful flowerbeds and giving way to vibrant private gardens with a wide expanse of lush healthy lawns and tall shielding woodlands. A sturdy tree house can provide hours of playtime and is complete with rope ladder and climbing net. A raised area of lawn to the side of this features a pretty loveseat complete with leafy garden arch canopy. Upon approaching the house, one is welcomed by a beautiful Magnolia tree that, when in bloom, adds a certain touch of traditional elegance.
